2019 Camp Details

The 2nd Canadian Baseball Umpire winter camp will be held February 8-10 2019 in Oakville, Ontario. This camp has been specifically designed to maximize the potential of every umpire who attends, regardless of experience. CBUC will be offering 3 instructional programs: The "Level 1 and Level 2 Certification Programs" as well as our "Advanced Training Program" for our more experienced umpires (Level 3's +), as well as umpires attending who do not reside in the province of Ontario.

LEARN FROM PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL UMPIRES

Curriculum Overview
Classroom
Field Work
Cage Work (Plate)

During this camp, umpires will be taught the proper "heel-instep" stance, along with slot positioning, height height, shoulder alignment, torso lean, eye-tracking, timing, making necessary adjustments when "pinched", style of calls, as well as proper strike zone judgement using an innovative strike zone tracking tool. Instructors will also be using video technology during the cage sessions, as this allows students to review their work, as well as specific instructor feedback, after the fact. During our cage sessions, umpires will see simulated pitching. This gives the umpires the most "real game" like setting. This repetition helps build experience, which will ultimately allow each umpire who attends this camp to become more successful moving forward in their umpire career, no matter what their individual aspirations may be.

Students will apply lessons and techniques learned in the classroom, during their field work. By discussing certain rules and mechanics in the classroom, and then implementing them in an "in-game" like environment which will be done during the field session, truly allows students to fully grasp the concepts being taught, and helps students to retain the information, which will allow them to become more successful during their respective seasons. Students will focus on the concepts of proper mechanics, style of calls, use of voice, as well as rotation responsibilities for both the plate and base umpire(s), plays at the plate, double play footwork, use of the working area, shading, all while implementing the rules learned in the classroom. Additionally, situation management will also be covered during this time.

In the classroom, students will be taught, and given a refresher of some of baseball's most complicated rules. Some of the rules covered include: the different types of interference, obstruction, pitching regulations, balks, the strike zone, etc. Rules will be taught based on the Official Baseball Rules and the MiLB Interpretations Manual, as well as the OBA and Baseball Canada Rule Interpretation Manuals. As well, students will take an in-depth look at the 2 umpire system, with the more experience umpires also looking at the 3 and 4-umpire systems, in addition to the 2-umpire system. Additionally, students will also be shown different ways to stay healthy and safe on the field. Students will be shown the umpire stretching matrix, which was designed and created specifically for umpires. All of which will aid in your on-field longevity.
